Recipes and Scaling

Recipes are the friendliest proportion questions — and one of the 11+'s favourite dressings for them. One scale factor, applied to every ingredient, and dinner (and the marks) are saved.

Cook for 6 from a recipe for 4.
Scale recipes with the same proportional thinking — via one person, or a multiplier.
Pancakes for 4 use 200 g flour. How much for 6?
for 1: 200 ÷ 4 = 50 g
for 6: 50 × 6 = 300 g
(Or spot the multiplier: 6 is 1.5 × 4, and 1.5 × 200 = 300.)
Every ingredient scales by the SAME factor.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Find the factor (or go via 1).

4 → 6 people is × 1.5. Or one person's amount: 200 ÷ 4 = 50 g.

2Scale EVERY ingredient.

Flour 300 g, and the same × 1.5 for eggs, milk, butter — no favourites.

3Halve-and-add shortcut.

1.5 × anything = the amount + half of it: 200 + 100 = 300.

Worked Example

A recipe for 4 uses 2 eggs and 300 ml milk. Scale it for 10 people.

Factor
10 ÷ 4 = 2.5
Eggs
2 × 2.5 = 5
✓ Milk
300 × 2.5 = 750
5 eggs, 750 ml

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Adding people as grams.
4 → 6 people: 200 + 2 = 202 g ✕

Scale, don’t add! One and a half times the people needs one and a half times the flour: 300 g.

Scaling only some ingredients.

Everything! Extra flour with the old amount of milk ruins pancakes AND ratio questions. One factor for every line.

Rounding eggs badly.

Real-world note: 2.5 eggs for 5 people? In exams keep the exact value; in kitchens round sensibly and say so.
