A bar chart's only trick is its scale: when each line is worth 2 or 5, reading heights as 1s wrecks every answer. This lesson builds the scale-first habit, then the compare-and-total questions.
Check what one grid line is worth — often 2, 5 or 10, not 1.
Follow the bar's top across to the axis. Between lines? Use the gap value.
‘How many more?’ = subtract: 12 apples − 8 bananas = 4 more.
Using the chart above: how many children were asked altogether, and how many more chose apples than grapes?
Read the scale! With lines worth 2, the 6th line means 12.
Read the question! ‘How many chose apples?’ needs a number (12) — ‘Which was most popular?’ needs the category (apples).
Careful! Two charts with different scales can’t be compared by bar height alone — convert to numbers first.
Look at the numbered axis and work out what each grid line is worth — if the numbers go 0, 2, 4, 6, each line counts 2, so a bar reaching the 6th line shows 12.
A bigger amount in that category — bar height represents frequency (how many).
Because each bar is a separate category (apple, banana…) rather than a continuous scale — the gaps signal there's nothing 'between' the categories.
