Venn and Carroll Diagrams

Venn circles and Carroll grids sort the same information two different ways — and both exams and 11+ papers use each. This lesson pins down the overlap, the forgotten 'neither' region, and the count-check habit.

Learn the 2 Diagrams

1Venn: circles that overlap.

Each circle is a rule. The overlap holds items obeying BOTH; outside holds items obeying neither.

2Carroll: a yes/no grid.

Rows: even / not even. Columns: multiple of 3 / not. Every item lands in exactly one box.

💡 Key IdeaEvery item goes somewhere — items fitting neither rule sit OUTSIDE the circles (or in the no-no box). Forgetting them is the classic slip.

Worked Example

Sort 1–10 into the Venn above. Which numbers are in the overlap, and which are outside both circles?

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Leaving out the ‘neither’ items.

The classic! 1, 5 and 7 fit neither rule — they go OUTSIDE the circles, not nowhere. Count all items at the end.

Overlap = ‘either’.

Wrong! The overlap means BOTH rules true at once. 4 is even but not a multiple of 3 — it stays in the Even-only region.

Double-placing in a Carroll diagram.

One box each! Every item belongs in exactly one of the four boxes — if 6 appears twice, a rule was misread.
