Learn the 3-Step Method

1Line up the decimal points.

Write the numbers under each other with the points aligned.

2Pad with zeros.

Give both numbers the same number of decimal places: 0.7 → 0.70.

3Compare from the left.

Compare digit by digit: 7 tenths beats 6 tenths, so 0.70 > 0.65.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Longer means bigger.
0.65 > 0.7 ✕

Wrong! More digits doesn’t mean bigger. Pad zeros: 0.70 vs 0.65 → 0.7 wins.

Comparing like whole numbers.
“65 > 7, so 0.65 > 0.7” ✕

Wrong! The digits after the point are not a whole number — compare place by place from the left.

Ignoring the ones digit.
2.9 > 3.1 ✕

Wrong! Compare the whole-number part first: 3 beats 2, so 3.1 > 2.9 no matter what follows.
