Ordering Decimals

Ordering 0.5, 0.45 and 0.405 trips up half of every Year 5 class. The fix is one simple habit — pad every number to the same number of decimal places — and this lesson drills it with clear examples.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Pad with zeros.

Give every decimal the same number of decimal places.

0.500 · 0.450 · 0.405

2Compare from the left.

Order them place by place, like a dictionary orders words.

405 < 450 < 500

3Write the original numbers.

Give your answer using the numbers as they were written.

0.405, 0.45, 0.5

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Ordering by length.
2.09 > 2.9 ✕

Wrong! More digits isn’t bigger. 2.09 < 2.90 — compare tenths: 0 vs 9.

Forgetting a number.

Careful! With 4+ numbers it’s easy to drop one. Count your answer list — it must match the question.

Wrong direction.
2.9, 2.31, 2.3, 2.09

Check the question! This is largest-to-smallest. If it asks smallest-to-largest, reverse it.

How do you order decimals with different numbers of digits?

Pad them all to the same number of decimal places with zeros — 0.5 becomes 0.500 — then order them like whole numbers of thousandths.

Does adding zeros change a decimal?

No. Zeros at the end of the decimal part change nothing: 0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500. They only make comparing easier.
