Learn the 3-Step Method

1Find the whole numbers either side.

2.7 is bigger than 2 but smaller than 3.

2 < 2.7 < 3

2Split the gap into 10 tenths.

Each small step between 2 and 3 is one tenth (0.1).

3Count along the tenths.

Count 7 steps from 2: that's 2.7.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Counting the marks instead of the gaps.

Careful! There are 11 marks but only 10 gaps. Each gap is one tenth.

Placing 0.65 past 0.7.
0.65 after 0.7 ✕

Wrong! 0.65 is less than 0.7. It sits between 0.6 and 0.7, halfway along.

Thinking 2.10 comes after 2.9.
2.9 → 2.10 ✕

Wrong! 2.10 equals 2.1, near the start. After 2.9 comes 3.0.
