Before letters, draw bars: the classic 'together they have 10, one has 4 more' puzzle becomes obvious as a picture. Bar models are Singapore-style maths at its best — and secretly they ARE algebra.

Take the 4 away from the total: 10 − 4 = 6 fills the two EQUAL bars.
6 ÷ 2 = 3 → Ava has 3, Ben has 3 + 4 = 7.
A number machine adds 7 and gets 12: solve x + 7 = 12 with a bar.
The 4 first! The bars aren’t equal until the extra 4 is removed: (10 − 4) ÷ 2 = 3.
Re-read! BEN has 4 more — his bar is longer. Ava 3, Ben 7 (not the other way round).
Finish! Questions often ask for BOTH amounts. Ava = 3 AND Ben = 7; check 3 + 7 = 10 ✓.

Draw two equal bars plus an extra 4 making 10 in total; remove the 4 (leaving 6), halve it (3 each), and add the 4 back to Ben (7).
