Sequences are pattern-detective work: find the gap, test it everywhere, then extend. This lesson covers increasing, decreasing and doubling rules, plus the fill-the-gap questions exams prefer.
7 − 3 = 4, 11 − 7 = 4, 15 − 11 = 4 — the difference each time.
‘Add 4’ (sequences can also subtract, or even double).
Next: 15 + 4 = 19. A missing middle term: use the rule from its neighbour.
Fill the gap: 40, 34, ?, 22, 16.
Check every gap! 2→4 adds 2, 4→8 adds 4 — this sequence doubles. Next: 16.
It’s decreasing! The rule is subtract 3: next is 11.
Careful! Use the neighbour BEFORE the gap with the forward rule (34 − 6), or the one after with the reverse (22 + 6) — both must agree.
The instruction that gets you from each term to the next, like 'add 4' for 3, 7, 11, 15 or 'double' for 2, 4, 8, 16.
Work the rule forward from the term before it (34 − 6 = 28) and check backward from the term after (22 + 6 = 28) — they must match.
