Simplifying Expressions

Simplifying is tidying: gather the a's with the a's and the b's with the b's. This lesson teaches like-terms collecting and the three sign-and-letter slips that cause almost every error.

A5Simplifying Expressions
Collect the matching letters.
Simplify expressions by adding up like terms: 3a + 2a = 5a.
Three apples plus two apples…
3a + 2a = 5a
4a + 3b − a = 3a + 3b
a-terms collect with a-terms; b-terms with b-terms.
Like terms share the same letter — only they can be combined.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Find the like terms.

Terms with the same letter: 3a and 2a are like; 3a and 3b are not.

3a … 2a ✓

2Add or subtract their numbers.

3a + 2a: add the 3 and 2 → 5a. The letter stays put.

3 + 2 → 5a

3Leave unlike terms alone.

2a + 3b won't combine — it's already as simple as it gets.

2a + 3b stays
💡 Key IdeaA letter on its own means 1 of it: a + a = 2a, and 4a − a = 3a (not 4).

Worked Example

Simplify 5x + 2y + 3x − y.

Collect the x's
5x + 3x = 8x
Collect the y's
2y − y = 1y = y
✓ Simplified
8x + y

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Combining unlike terms.
2a + 3b = 5ab ✕

Wrong! Different letters can’t merge — 2 apples + 3 bananas isn’t 5 “apple-bananas”. It stays 2a + 3b.

Losing the lonely letter.
4a − a = 4 ✕

Wrong! a means 1a, so 4a − 1a = 3a.

Dropping a subtraction sign.
2y − y = 3y ✕

Watch the sign! The y is being TAKEN AWAY: 2y − y = y.

Cheat Sheet

SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS
  1. Like terms share the same letter.
  2. Add/subtract the numbers; the letter stays.
  3. A bare letter counts as 1 of it.
  4. Unlike terms stay separate: 2a + 3b is finished.
Examples: 3a + 2a = 5a · 5x + 2y + 3x − y = 8x + y.

Quick summary

Frequently asked questions

What are like terms?

Terms containing the same letter: 3a and 2a are like terms and combine to 5a; 3a and 3b are unlike and stay separate.

Why isn't 2a + 3b equal to 5ab?

Because a and b are different unknown numbers — adding two of one and three of the other doesn't make five of some combined thing.

What does a letter with no number mean?

One of that letter: a is 1a. So 4a − a leaves 3a, not 4.
