Scientists make sense of millions of species by grouping them. This lesson starts with the biggest split — backbone or no backbone — then the five vertebrate groups and how a classification key sorts any creature.
The first big question: does it have a backbone? Vertebrates do; invertebrates (insects, spiders, snails, worms) don't.
Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals — each with tell-tale features (mammals have fur and feed young milk; birds have feathers).
A branching set of yes/no questions sorts any creature: ‘Does it have wings? → Does it have feathers?’

Features, not habitat! Whales and dolphins live in the sea but are mammals — lungs, warm blood, milk for their young.
Count the legs! Insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. Spiders have 8 legs — they’re arachnids, not insects.
They transform! Amphibians like frogs start in water with gills (tadpoles) and move to land with lungs as adults.
Vertebrates have a backbone (a spine); invertebrates don't. Insects, spiders, worms and snails are all invertebrates.
Because it breathes air with lungs, is warm-blooded and feeds its young milk — the features that define mammals, regardless of living in the sea.
