Day and night, the changing seasons, the Moon's phases — all come from movements in space. This lesson explains Earth's spin, orbit and tilt, correcting the myths that the Sun moves and that distance causes seasons.

Learn the Movements

1Day and night: Earth spins.

The Earth rotates once every 24 hours. The side facing the Sun has day; the side facing away has night. The Sun doesn’t move across the sky — WE turn.

2A year: Earth orbits the Sun.

The Earth travels around the Sun once every 365¼ days — that’s a year.

3Seasons: the Earth is tilted.

Because Earth is tilted, each hemisphere leans toward the Sun for part of the year (summer) and away for part (winter). The Moon reflects sunlight and shows phases as it orbits Earth.

💡 Key IdeaThe Sun does not move around the Earth — the Earth spins, making the Sun APPEAR to rise and set. And it’s the tilt, not distance from the Sun, that causes seasons.

Why is it summer in the UK when it's winter in Australia?

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

‘The Sun moves round the Earth.’

The Earth spins! The Sun only APPEARS to move because we’re turning. Day and night come from Earth’s rotation, not the Sun travelling.

‘Seasons happen because Earth gets closer to the Sun.’

It’s the TILT! Distance barely changes. Seasons come from Earth’s axis being tilted, so hemispheres lean toward or away from the Sun.

‘The Moon makes its own light.’

It reflects! The Moon shines by reflecting sunlight, and its phases are the different amounts of its lit half we can see as it orbits Earth.
