Life Cycles and Reproduction

A caterpillar becomes a butterfly; a kitten just grows into a cat. This lesson compares life cycles, explains metamorphosis, and shows how inherited variation is the seed of evolution.

Born → grow → reproduce → (offspring repeat the cycle). Amphibians, insects, birds, mammals and plants all have one.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

‘Offspring are identical to parents.’

Similar, not identical! Young inherit features but vary — different from each other and their parents. That variation matters for evolution.

‘All animals hatch from eggs.’

Most mammals don’t! Mammals usually give birth to live young. Birds, most reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects lay eggs.

Muddling the metamorphosis order.

Egg first! Butterfly: egg → larva (caterpillar) → pupa (chrysalis) → adult. The pupa is the resting, transforming stage.
