Forces and Magnets

Every movement is shaped by forces — pushes and pulls. This lesson covers gravity, friction and air resistance, plus magnets, correcting the big myth that heavy things fall faster.

Learn the Forces

1Gravity pulls toward Earth.

A force that pulls all objects down toward the Earth’s centre. It’s why things fall and gives us weight.

2Friction opposes sliding.

When surfaces rub, friction resists movement and can produce heat. Rough surfaces = more friction; smooth = less.

3Air/water resistance opposes motion.

Moving through air or water is slowed by resistance (drag). Parachutes use big air resistance to fall slowly.

💡 Key IdeaMagnets add a special force: they attract magnetic materials (iron, steel, nickel) without touching them, and have north and south poles — like poles repel, unlike poles attract.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

‘Heavy things fall faster.’

Not because of weight! Without air resistance, all objects fall at the same rate. A feather falls slowly because of AIR RESISTANCE, not because it’s light.

‘Friction is always bad.’

We need it! Friction lets us walk, grip and stop. Without it, everything would slide — brakes and shoe grips rely on friction.

‘Magnets attract all metals.’

Only some! Magnets attract iron, steel and nickel — not aluminium, copper or gold. Not all metals are magnetic.
