Every sound starts with a vibration and travels to your ears through a material. This lesson explains why space is silent, and the difference between loud (big vibrations) and high (fast vibrations).
Pluck a string, hit a drum, speak — something vibrates. Stop the vibration and the sound stops.
Vibrations pass through air (usually), and also water and solids. Sound CANNOT travel through empty space (a vacuum) — there’s nothing to vibrate.
Bigger vibrations = LOUDER. Faster vibrations = HIGHER pitch. A thin, tight, short string vibrates fast → high note.
Why does a short guitar string make a higher note than a long one?
It can’t! Space is a vacuum — no particles to vibrate. Sound needs a material (air, water, solid) to travel through.
Different things! LOUD is about the SIZE of the vibration (volume). HIGH is about the SPEED of the vibration (pitch). A quiet high whistle vs a loud low drum.
Solids are faster! Sound travels faster through solids and water than through air, because the particles are closer together.
