Coordinates (Four Quadrants)

When negative numbers join the grid, (−3, 2) means left three, up two. This lesson extends coordinates to all four quadrants — a Year 6 objective and a staple of 11+ papers.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Same rule: (x, y).

Across first (negative = left), then up (negative = down).

(−3, 2) = left 3, up 2

2Know the quadrants.

Top-right (+,+) · top-left (−,+) · bottom-left (−,−) · bottom-right (+,−).

+/+ · −/+ · −/− · +/−

3Points on the axes.

On the y-axis, x = 0: (0, 4). On the x-axis, y = 0: (−2, 0).

💡 Key IdeaThe signs are a compass: x negative means left, y negative means down — read each sign separately.

Which quadrant is each point in?

(−4, 1)

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Ignoring the minus sign.
(−3, 2) plotted at (3, 2) ✕

Check signs! Negative x goes left of the y-axis.

Both negatives = top right.
(−3, −2) in the top-right ✕

Wrong! Negative x AND negative y → bottom-left quadrant.

Counting the origin as 1.

Still start at 0! From the origin, −3 means three steps left. The origin itself is (0, 0).
