Regular and Irregular Polygons

Is a rectangle regular? Surprisingly, no — regular demands equal sides AND equal angles, and the rectangle only manages one. This short lesson makes the two-test definition stick.

‘Regular hexagon’ or ‘irregular hexagon’ — the side-count name stays the same.

💡 Key IdeaA rectangle has 4 equal angles but NOT 4 equal sides — so it's an irregular quadrilateral. The only regular quadrilateral is the square.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Equal sides is enough.

Not enough! A rhombus has 4 equal sides but unequal angles — it’s irregular. Regular needs both tests passed.

Equal angles is enough.

Not enough! A rectangle has 4 equal angles but unequal sides — also irregular.

‘Irregular’ means ‘weird-looking’.

Wrong! Irregular is a precise term: any polygon where sides or angles differ. A perfectly neat rectangle is still irregular.
