Protractors have two scales, and the wrong one is the single biggest source of lost marks in angle questions. This lesson teaches the line-up routine and the estimate-first habit that beats the trap.
Protractor centre exactly on the angle's point; baseline exactly along one arm.
Follow the scale that starts at 0° on your baseline arm — protractors have two scales.
Looks acute but you read 130°? You used the wrong scale — the answer is 50°.
Draw an angle of 65°.
Wrong scale! If it looks acute, the answer must be under 90° — it’s 65°. Estimate first.
Set-up! The protractor’s centre cross must sit exactly on the angle’s vertex, or every reading is off.
Careful! The baseline is the 0° line printed on the protractor, not its plastic bottom edge.
So you can measure angles opening from either direction. Follow the scale that starts at 0° on the arm you lined up — and estimate first to check.
Draw a base line and mark a point; place the protractor's centre on the point with the baseline along the line; count up from 0° to 65° and mark; join and label.
Within about 2° for measuring and drawing — good line-up matters more than perfect eyesight.
