Measuring and Drawing Angles

Protractors have two scales, and the wrong one is the single biggest source of lost marks in angle questions. This lesson teaches the line-up routine and the estimate-first habit that beats the trap.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Line up.

Protractor centre exactly on the angle's point; baseline exactly along one arm.

2Start from 0°.

Follow the scale that starts at 0° on your baseline arm — protractors have two scales.

3Estimate to check.

Looks acute but you read 130°? You used the wrong scale — the answer is 50°.

Worked Example

Draw an angle of 65°.

1 · Base line
Draw a straight line; mark a point on it.
2 · Line up & mark
Centre on the point, baseline on the line, count up the 0° scale to 65° and mark.

Join point to mark; label the angle 65°. Check: acute ✓

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Reading the wrong scale.

Wrong scale! If it looks acute, the answer must be under 90° — it’s 65°. Estimate first.

Centre off the point.

Set-up! The protractor’s centre cross must sit exactly on the angle’s vertex, or every reading is off.

Measuring from the protractor edge.

Careful! The baseline is the 0° line printed on the protractor, not its plastic bottom edge.
