Area of Rectangles

Area is how much surface a shape covers — rows of unit squares, counted quickly by multiplying. This lesson builds the length × width formula from the picture, so the ² in cm² actually means something.

Worked Example

A rectangular rug is 3 m long and 2 m wide. What is its area — and what does carpeting it cost at £15 per m²?

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Adding instead of multiplying.
Area = 8 + 5 = 13 ✕

Wrong! Adding gives half the perimeter. Area MULTIPLIES: 8 × 5 = 40 cm².

Forgetting the square unit.
Area = 40 cm ✕

Wrong unit! Area is measured in cm² — the little ² shows it’s squares, not length.

Mixing units before multiplying.
1 m × 50 cm = 50 m² ✕

Wrong! Same units first: 100 cm × 50 cm = 5000 cm² (= 0.5 m²).
