Area of Triangles

Why is a triangle's area (base × height) ÷ 2? Because every triangle is half of a rectangle — and once children see that picture, the formula stops being a rule to memorise and starts being obvious.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Find base and height.

The height is the straight-up distance from the base to the top — not a slanted side.

2Multiply base × height.

10 × 6 = 60 — that's the surrounding rectangle.

10 × 6 = 60

3Halve it.

The triangle is half the rectangle: 60 ÷ 2 = 30 cm².

💡 Key IdeaThe height must be perpendicular (at right angles) to the base — the ruler-straight-up distance, not the sloped edge.

Worked Example

A triangular sail has a base of 4 m and a height of 7 m. Find its area.

Rectangle first
4 × 7 = 28
Halve
28 ÷ 2 = 14
✓ Answer
14 m²

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Forgetting to halve.
A = 10 × 6 = 60 cm² ✕

Wrong! That’s the rectangle. The triangle is half: 30 cm².

Using the slanted side as height.

Wrong! Height is the perpendicular distance from base to apex — the dashed line straight up, never the sloping edge.

Halving base AND height.
(10÷2) × (6÷2) = 15 cm² ✕

Wrong! Halve once, at the end: (10 × 6) ÷ 2 = 30 cm².
