Compound Shapes

L-shapes look hard until you draw one dashed line: every compound shape is rectangles in disguise. This lesson covers the split, the missing-side subtraction, and the six-sided perimeter trap.

Learn the 3-Step Method

1Split into rectangles.

Draw a dashed line to cut the L into two rectangles.

L = A + B

2Find any missing sides.

Use the sides you know: whole width − part width, etc.

? = 17 − 10

3Add the areas.

Area A + Area B = total area.

💡 Key IdeaMissing sides are found by subtracting known sides — the whole shape's edges must agree.

Worked Example

An L-shape: total width 10 cm, total height 10 cm. The top rectangle is 10 × 5; the bottom-right piece is 7 × 5. Find the total area.

Rectangle A
10 × 5 = 50
Rectangle B
7 × 5 = 35
✓ Total
50 + 35 = 85
85 cm²

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Multiplying the outer dimensions.
A = 10 × 10 = 100 cm² ✕

Wrong! That fills in the notch. Split and add the real pieces: 85 cm².

Missing a side in the perimeter.

Careful! An L-shape has 6 sides. Trace the outline with a finger and tick each side as you add it.

Guessing missing lengths.

Don’t guess! Calculate: if the whole width is 10 and one part is 3, the other part is 10 − 3 = 7.
