Units of Mass

How heavy is a banana — 2 g, 120 g or 2 kg? Estimating mass well comes from anchoring units to familiar objects, and this lesson builds those anchors before the conversion work in ME4.

A crisp packet is about 25 g; a slice of bread about 40 g.

1000 grams = 1 kilogram. ('kilo' means a thousand.)

💡 Key Idea‘Kilo’ always means × 1000 — kilogram, kilometre… a thousand of the base unit.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Mass vs weight muddle at the shops.

Everyday note: scientists call this mass; shops say “weight”. At KS2, both words point to grams and kilograms — just use g and kg correctly.

Thinking 100 g = 1 kg.
“100 g = 1 kg” ✕

Wrong! 1000 g = 1 kg. (100 g is just a small apple.)

Bigger object = heavier.
“A balloon is heavier than a coin — it’s bigger” ✕

Wrong! Size isn’t mass. A 9 g coin outweighs a 3 g balloon.
