Converting Mass

2.5 kg of flour — how many grams? Mass conversion is one fact (1000 g = 1 kg) plus the digit-sliding skill, and this lesson applies it to the recipe-style problems exams love.

ME4Converting Mass
Grams ↔ kilograms with ×1000 and ÷1000.
Convert mass the same way as length — slide the digits three places.
2.5 kg = ? g
kg g: × 1000
2.5 × 1000 = 2500 g
kg → g: × 1000 · g → kg: ÷ 1000

Learn the 3-Step Method

1The conversion number is 1000.

1000 g = 1 kg — three places to slide.

1000

2kg → g: multiply.

Smaller unit → more of them: 2.5 kg = 2500 g.

2.5 → 2500

3g → kg: divide.

Bigger unit → fewer: 750 g = 0.75 kg.

750 → 0.75
💡 Key IdeaSame-unit rule again: before adding or comparing masses, convert to the same unit first.

Worked Example

A recipe needs 1.2 kg of flour. Dad has a 500 g bag and a 800 g bag. Is that enough?

Same units
1.2 kg = 1200 g
Total flour
500 + 800 = 1300 g
✓ Answer
1300 g > 1200 g
Yes — 100 g spare

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Sliding two places instead of three.
2.5 kg = 250 g ✕

Wrong! ×1000 is three places: 2500 g.

Adding mixed units.
1.2 kg + 500 g = 501.2 ✕

Wrong! Convert first: 1200 g + 500 g = 1700 g (1.7 kg).

Dividing to go to grams.
3 kg = 3 ÷ 1000 = 0.003 g ✕

Sense-check! Grams are smaller, so you need MORE: 3 kg = 3000 g.

Quick summary

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert kilograms to grams?

Multiply by 1000 — slide the digits three places left. 2.5 kg = 2500 g.

How do you add masses in different units?

Convert them to the same unit first. 1.2 kg + 500 g becomes 1200 g + 500 g = 1700 g (or 1.7 kg).

What's a quick sense-check for mass conversions?

Grams are small, so a mass in grams should be a bigger number than the same mass in kilograms: 2500 g = 2.5 kg.
