Measurement Problem Solving

The final lesson chains everything: units, perimeter and area, capacity, time and money in exam-style problems. The routine — read twice, match units, one line per step, check the unit of the answer — earns the marks.

Worked Example

Ana's water bottle holds 750 ml. She fills it twice a day. How many litres does she drink in a school week (5 days)?

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Answering in the wrong unit.
“7500 litres” ✕

Careful! The working was in ml. The question asked for litres: 7500 ml = 7.5 l.

Skipping a step.
skirting = 14 × £6 = £84 ✕

Re-read! The doorway needs no board: (14 − 1) × 6 = £78.

No units in the working.

Risky! Bare numbers cause unit mix-ups. Write 750 ml, 14 m, £6 per m at every step.
