When two fractions have the same denominator, adding them is simple: add the numerators and keep the denominator the same. This lesson walks through the 3-step method with pizza models so the rule makes visual sense.

Wrong! Keep the denominator the same: the answer is 58.
Wrong! Add the top numbers, don’t multiply them: 2 + 3 = 5, so the answer is 58.
Wrong! The denominator stays the same: 58.
Add the numerators and keep the denominator the same. For example, 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8.
The denominator describes the size of the pieces, and the pieces don't change size when you put them together — you just have more of them. Adding denominators (2/8 + 3/8 = 5/16) gives a smaller, wrong answer.
Adding fractions with the same denominator begins in Year 3–4; adding with different denominators follows in Years 5–6.
