Which is bigger — 1/2 or 1/4? 3/5 or 2/3? This lesson teaches the 3-step method for comparing any two fractions: check the denominators, compare numerators when they match, and use equivalent fractions when they don't.
Are the denominators the same?
Compare the numerators. The larger numerator is bigger.
Find equivalent fractions first. Then compare.
Compare the fractions. Write <, > or =.
Wrong! 14 is actually bigger — cutting into more pieces makes each piece smaller.
Wrong! You must compare the fractions, not the bottom numbers: 915 < 1015, so 23 is bigger.
Make the pieces the same size first:
✓ So 3/4 is bigger.
If the denominators are the same, compare the numerators — the bigger numerator wins. If the denominators are different, convert to equivalent fractions with the same denominator first, then compare.
No — usually the opposite. Cutting a whole into more pieces makes each piece smaller, so 1/8 is smaller than 1/4.
The greater-than (>), less-than (<) and equals (=) symbols. For example 3/4 > 2/4 and 2/3 = 4/6.
Comparing and ordering fractions appears from Year 3 with the same denominator, and with different denominators in Years 5–6 — it is a frequent 11+ question type.
