Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions look different but represent exactly the same amount — 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 are all the same amount of chocolate. This lesson shows your child how to make equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the top and bottom by the same number.

The 3-Step Method

1Start with a fraction.

Here is one half — 1 of 2 equal pieces.

2Cut every piece in half.

Now you have a new fraction — 2 of 4 pieces. The amount hasn't changed.

3Cut every piece in half again.

The amount is the same — 4 of 8 pieces — but the pieces are smaller.

💡 Key IdeaIf you multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number, the fraction is equivalent.

Worked Example

Find two fractions that are equivalent to 12.

12 × 22 = 24
Multiply top and bottom by 2.
12 × 44 = 48
Multiply top and bottom by 4.
✓ Answer
12 , 24 and 48
are all equivalent fractions.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Thinking a bigger numerator means a bigger fraction.
12 < 24

This is wrong. They are equal. 24 is just 12 cut into smaller pieces.

Only multiplying the numerator or the denominator.
12 = 23

This is wrong. You must multiply both the top and the bottom by the same number: 12 = 24.

Not realising there are many equivalent fractions.
12 = 24 = 48 = 816

There are infinitely many! Keep multiplying top and bottom by the same number.
