Simplifying Fractions

Simplifying a fraction means writing it with the smallest possible numbers — without changing the amount. Your child will learn the 3-step method: find the biggest common factor, divide the top and bottom by it, and keep going until the fraction is in its simplest form.

The 3-Step Method

1Find a fraction.

Start with any fraction.

2Find a common factor.

Find the biggest number that divides both the top and the bottom.

The biggest common factor of 2 and 6 is 2.

3Divide top and bottom.

Divide the numerator and denominator by that factor.

2 ÷ 26 ÷ 2 = 13
💡 Key IdeaWhen we simplify a fraction, we divide the top and bottom by the same number. The amount stays the same, but the numbers get smaller.

Worked Example

Simplify each fraction.

48 = 4 ÷ 48 ÷ 4 = 12
69 = 6 ÷ 39 ÷ 3 = 23
912 = 9 ÷ 312 ÷ 3 = 34
✓ Always divide top and bottom by the same number.

Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Not using a common factor.
26 = 2 ÷ 16 ÷ 1 = 26

This is still the same fraction. You must use a factor that makes the numbers smaller.

Dividing by different numbers.
26 = 2 ÷ 26 ÷ 3 = 12

This is wrong. Always divide the top and bottom by the same number.

Stopping too early.
48 = 24

You can simplify more!

24 = 2 ÷ 24 ÷ 2 = 12

Keep going until the only common factor is 1.
