This is the whole object or amount.
Count how many equal parts the whole is divided into. That is the bottom number (the denominator).
Count how many of those equal parts you have. That is the top number (the numerator).

The top number is how many parts you have, not the total. The total parts is the bottom number.
34 is bigger than 14 because more parts are shaded — 3 out of 4 instead of 1 out of 4.
The parts must all be the same size. Unequal pieces are not fractions of the whole.
A fraction is a way of describing part of a whole. If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you take 1 slice, you have 1/4 (one quarter) of the pizza.
The bottom number (the denominator) tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The top number (the numerator) tells you how many of those parts you have.
In England, children meet halves and quarters in Years 1–2, learn the words numerator and denominator around Year 3, and work with equivalent fractions, comparing and calculating with fractions through Years 4–6.
The most common mistakes are thinking the top number is the total number of parts, and forgetting that the parts must be equal in size. Visual models like pizzas and bars help fix both.
