Watch Out! Common Mistakes

Subtracting the denominators.
78 28 = 56

Wrong! The denominator stays the same: 58.

Subtracting top and bottom.
78 28 = 50

Wrong! Only subtract the top numbers. You can never have 0 as a denominator.

Forgetting the denominator.
78 28 = 5

Wrong! Don’t forget the denominator! The answer is 58, not 5.
